What does Retinol do for skin? 

Retinol, which is derived from Vitamin A, has been touted as the “gold standard” of anti-aging skincare products. Also, known as retinoids, Retinol increases collagen production and decreases wrinkles by thickening the skin from the inside out. It does so by speeding up the body’s natural process of causing skin cells to turn over. 

Why does my skin look red and flaky when I use Retinol? 

This is known as a retinoid reaction and it means the product you are using is too strong or you are applying it too frequently. Retinol must be introduced to your skincare regime gradually, and the rule-of-thumb is “low and slow.” We’ll explain more about this at the time of your skincare consultation! 

Why do I need to exfoliate? 

Your skin is alive and constantly undergoing natural cellular turnover. As new cells are created in the dermis they are pushed to the surface. Older cells die off and slough away to make room for new, healthy skin cells. As we age, however, the dead cells tend to cling on longer, causing the skin to look dry, dull, and rough. The dead cells can also block pores leading to breakouts and blemishes. 

Exfoliating is a means of removing the build-up of dead skin cells to restore youthful radiance, keep the pores clear, and reduce breakouts. Doing so regularly will also help your other skincare products penetrate more effectively! Exfoliating regularly is especially important when using Retinol, to avoid the flakiness caused by the accelerated cellular turnover. 

What’s the best way to exfoliate?
