7 Things to Know Before Getting Injectables

We’re breaking down the myths behind one of the most popular treatments in cosmetic services: injectables. Aesthetic treatments are now more widely recognized and accepted as a component of wellness and self-care (they’re no longer taboo topics, thank goodness!). The confidence achieved after a successful treatment can work wonders for one’s physical and emotional wellbeing, but for those still new to injectables, there are many myths and misconceptions to debunk first. >>

We’re answering all of your questions (like how long results last and how to achieve natural-looking improvements) and sharing everything you need to know before getting injectables.

1- What sort of results can I expect from injectables?
Botox® and dermal fillers offer instant results, but the degree of impact comes down to the amount used during each treatment, guided by each client’s individual needs and desires. Angela Marnell Street, a Cosmetic Nurse Injector with Skinpossible Laser & Light Solutions Ltd, shared her approach for ensuring the client gets the result they want: “Communication is key. It is crucial to develop an open, honest dialogue with a client. What one person perceives as natural may not be what another does. Having a client point out what they would like and be part of the process is one way to keep from 'over injecting'.”

With a deep understanding of our clients’ desires, our injection nurses can use their expertise to determine the number of syringes required to reach those results. When a client comes in with a set number of syringes in their mind, it doesn’t always correlate to the results they’re seeking. We want to ensure every client leaves our clinic with a smile on their face (and not a wrinkle in sight).

Whether you’re seeking subtle results as part of preventative treatment or just maintenance, our team of injection nurses can advise you on the best course of treatment to achieve your desired results.

2- How soon do you see results from injectables?
Patients see immediate results with injectables. The client can work with their cosmetic nurse injector throughout the treatment to ensure the results meet expectations. “I've always injected and then shown clients the immediate results in a mirror before proceeding to inject the next side,” says Angela. “It's a 'no surprise' approach and it's been a success in my 10 years of injecting.”

The “no surprise approach” is one of the reasons injectables are so popular—they’re perfect for anything from preventative treatment to an immediate pick-me-up for a special event. That being said, we advise always testing treatments once or twice prior to a big day. The day before your wedding is not the time to try Botox® for the first time.

3- How long do results from injectables last?
Results from injectables  can last anywhere from a few months to a couple of years. The longevity is based on the type of filler and an individual’s metabolism. When you begin treatments, keep a mental note of how long results appear to last., That way, you’ll have a good sense of how to space out your future appointments.

4- Are injectables safe?
Injectables are very safe, but like any medical aesthetic treatment, side effects can occur. Our licensed healthcare practitioners walk every client through the potential side effects and risks of each treatment, so patients have a full understanding. Angela stresses the importance of seeking reputable medical aesthetic clinics and having a full consultation with a certified nurse or doctor to find out if it's right for them. For example, certain vitamins and medications thin the blood, increasing the likelihood of bruising post-treatment. Meeting with a professional for an intake appointment to understand the pre- and post-care will help minimize the chances of side effects.

5- What are the common side effects of injectables?
It’s common to feel minor discomfort while the injectables are being administered, which can be reduced by applying numbing cream. Common post-procedure side effects can include pain, redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites. In addition, rare side effects, like infection or nodules around the injection site, can occur. We take great care in monitoring all patients, new and familiar, to catch any adverse reactions early and treat them appropriately.

6- Where can injectables be used?
The areas in which injectables can be used are endless, from your upper lip to your underarms! Your best course of action is to book a consultation with a professional to share your areas of concern and allow the professional to make recommendations on the best treatment course. Angela takes a conservative approach when working with new patients. “I advise on starting with a minimal dose. After seeing the results, patients can always add more Botox® or filler at their next visit. I also like to educate them on why wrinkles form on the skin and how Botox® and filler are a good way to 'slow down the clock,' so to speak, and prevent the current lines from becoming deeper.”

7- How much do injectables cost?
Injectables and dermal fillers typically cost between $750 and $1,500, while Botox® injections cost between $90 and $150. Botox® and dermal fillers treat different problem areas, so it’s important to discuss your concerns with your medical professional and follow their guidance on the best treatment to achieve your desired results.
